Boarding

Boarding is an integral part of Sacred Heart College. The on-site Hostel caters for 170 students from Years 9 to 13. Some return home each weekend, while others board full-time.

FACILITIES
Year 9 to 11 students share dormitories partitioned into cubicles, while for part of their Year 12 year and all of their Year 13 year, boarders have individual rooms. All students have access to common rooms with television. The sports fields, aquatic centre and gymnasium are also available for boarders’ use.

STUDY
All boarders are required to study - Years 9 and 10 for 1.5 hours and Year 11 to 13 for a minimum of two hours every night during the week. The study is supervised by teachers and other students who (can) help students with any difficulties. Boarders have access to the Library and computer rooms.

SPORT
Boarders have access to the full range of sports offered at the College and enjoy the advantage of not having to travel home on completion of sports practices after school.

SPIRITUAL
Boarders gather together for prayer every morning and night. Mass is celebrated every Saturday evening. Br John Koorey organises the liturgies.

FRIENDSHIP
The bonds of friendship formed during boarding days often last throughout life. Teenage boys enjoy the company of a larger group of their own age.

Every student is different so Hostel staff attempt to cater for individual needs and create a warm, hospitable environment. Parents are encouraged to make known any special needs, and to get in touch with Hostel staff at any time. In a Marist Hostel, a caring family spirit is a priority.

SUPERVISION
The Principal has overall responsibility for the Hostel, and day-to-day supervision is carried out by the Dean of Boarders, Mr Michael O'Donnell, and his staff. Students are not permitted to leave the property without permission.

LAUNDRY/CLEANING
All laundry is done on the property by the Hostel staff and the domestic side is under the supervision of a Matron.

MEALS
The Hostel has its own Catering Manager and staff, who work in pleasant conditions in a spacious Dining Hall.

INFIRMARY/DENTAL/MEDICAL
Boarders have access to dental and medical services as required. The infirmarian, Br Terence Maney, looks after students who are indisposed at any time of the day or night.

ACCESS
Families organise their sons' visits home with the Dean of Boarders during term time. If parents give permission, their sons can visit the homes of other students or local relatives nominated by parents.
