The College is a day and boarding school with more than 100 years of Marist tradition that upholds the values of its founder St Marcellin Champagnat. The College has a roll of 1200 students, who come from diverse economic, geographic and ethnic backgrounds. This includes 50 International Students. Old Boys of Sacred Heart are numbered among New Zealand’s top musicians, academics, artists, sportsmen, as well as religious and civil leaders. These include Sir Anand Satyanand -Governor-General of New Zealand, Sean Fitzpatrick - former All Black Captain, and Dan Davin - author and Rhodes Scholar. The College is a signatory to the Code of Practice for International Students and takes the welfare and education of our students very seriously. The number of International Students is small which enables students to be readily integrated into College life. Currently our International Students represent 12 different countries and regions.International DepartmentThe International Department provides comprehensive care for our International Students ranging from curriculum planning, to academic progress and reporting, language support, social and health support, career advice, as well as accommodation arrangements, holiday activities and travel insurance. At the beginning of each school term, International Students participate in a comprehensive orientation programme designed to familiarise them with the school environment and to help them understand school expectations. International Students are integrated into regular classes, across Years 9 - 13 and where appropriate, and receive extra support in particular subjects. The Dean of International Students and English Language Learners' Department assesses students’ English ability on their arrival and provide English teaching in small groups, enabling them to give the students plenty of individual attention. The College is in frequent contact with universities, polytechnics, and the Immigration Department to ensure our students are studying in a safe while relaxing environment where each student can make most of his personal and academic progress.
English ClassesWe have two fully qualified English Language Learner (ELL) teachers who teach small groups, according to their English language learning needs.AccommodationInternational Students have the choice of living in the College Boarding Hostel or in home stay accommodation. The Hostel is the preferred option for many students as it enables them to concentrate on their studies and speak more English. However, we are able to assist with home stays if required. Students in Years 7 & 8 are enrolled at the College only if at least one parent lives in New Zealand with them full time.
