Speech champs prevailThirteen Catholic schools from the Auckland and Whangarei areas competed in the Pompallier Shield Public Speaking Competition, which was held at Sacred Heart College on Wednesday, 12 May. It was a proud night for the host school.Year 13 student Sean Durkin was first in the Senior Prepared Speech Section, while Richard Kelly, a Year 10 student, was second in the Junior Prepared Speech Section. The topic was 'Is it possible to be a Catholic in the 21st Century and follow in the footsteps of Christ?'. In the Senior Prepared Scripture Reading Section, Dominic Jennings was third, while Thomas Klaassen was third in the
Junior Prepared Scripture Reading section.
Their combined performance meant that Sacred Heart retained the Pompallier Shield, which it also won last year.
The event was organised by Mr Mick O'Donnell, and the team was coached by Mrs Anne Renwick and Mrs Margaret Ward.
