Academic InstituteAchievements | Academic Institute | Year 7 & 8 Programme | Years 9-13 ProgrammeThe aim is to challenge all students at younger levels so that when they reach the exam years, they are better able to achieve at higher levels. The focus is on both teaching methods and student motivation. In particular, the new national curriculum, effective 2010, has been an opportunity for the Institute to lead a review of pedagogy and learning outcomes. The Institute operates a Study Centre which is open from 3.30-5pm Monday to Thursday. It is staffed by two members of staff each night, who are there to provide supervision and assistance where required. The Study Centre runs in F12 – a computer room and F13 – a conventional classroom. Students can work in the area that best suits their needs. It is open to all students from Year 7 to Year 13.
In conjunction with the Careers Department, the Institute has also introduced ‘Dreamcatcher’ software, which boys can use to log their skills, goals and plans for the future.
The use of cross-curricular and team-based projects will also become more prevalent. Among a myriad of further ideas being considered is having information available for parents online about their sons’ progress, which will enable them to better support their learning.
