Outside the ClassroomAt all year levels, boys can become involved in activities outside the classroom that help them to grow and become Marist Men. These include:
YEAR 7 & 8 OUTDOOR EDUCATION
This is a highlight of the intermediate school years. Taking place early in Term 1, it is a week-long programme of outdoor activities that develop confidence, physical and interpersonal skills. Activities include archery, kayaking, sailing, cycling, and for Year 8 students, a day at the outdoor education centre at Woodhill Forest.
YEAR 9 CAMP
This week-long adventure held in Term 4 is a time when lasting friendships are formed, and much fun is had. A long-standing tradition at the College, Year 9 boys, staff and parents come together at Lake Karapiro and participate in a wide range of activities on the land and water.
Year 12 PE CAMP
In Term 3 the Year 12 Physical Education students pack their bags and skis/snowboards and head off to Ohakune for the annual Year 12 Physical Education Ski Camp. Students look forward to the trip and historically it has been regarded as one of the highlights of a student's time at the College. The students stay at the Auckland Grammar Ski Lodge in Ohakune and for 4 days alternate between skiing/snowboarding and mountain craft activities. The mountain craft activities are lead by qualified instructors from Adventure Specialties and include such activities as ice climbing, ice cave construction and snow navigation. On the final day all of the students spend a day on Mt Ruapehu employing their new found skills skiing and snowboarding for the day. Attached to the trip are 2 Achievment Standards worth a total of 6 credits. They are as follows:
2.7 Analyse the application of risk management strategies to a challenging outdoor activity (3 credits)
2.8 Consistently demonstrate social responsibility through applying a social responsibility model in physical activity (3 credits)
DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD
A number of students in Year 10 and 11 participate in this challenging programme, which provides for experience in the outdoors, and community service.
SAMOA TRIP
Led by Br Marcel Hall, Year 12 students have an opportunity to travel to Samoa in the September school holidays to assist communities in need.
YOUNG VINNIES (St Vincent de Paul)
When working for the Young Vinnies, members are living out their faith in a very practical way. The Marist Pillar of ‘Support for individuals and families in need’ is clearly reflected by the work of the Young Vinnies, as we strive to realise St Vincent de Paul’s vision. The group meets every Tuesday, and is involved in fundraising and projects that provide practical support for people in need.
