Pastoral Care

Student Leadership

Our system of Pastoral Care is based in our Catholic, Marist and Champagnat philosophy. As a community of students, staff, parents, Old Boys and Friends, we share the privilege and responsibility to ensure a school culture where our Catholic values, based in Christ and the example of Mary and Marcellin Champagnat are passed on.

The Homeroom is the primary unifying unit within the College. The Homeroom teacher is the first point of contact for any minor pastoral (or curriculum) concerns, or queries. All students have a Homeroom period for 15 minutes at the start of the day with time for daily prayer, administration and updates on school matters.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have a Prefect assigned to their Homeroom who provides a “student” perspective on up and coming events. The prefects are able to explain the significance of traditional SHC events such as the school fair and Walter Kirby to the new students. They also become a senior role model who the younger students will know.

Our system of pastoral care also provides a Dean for each year level. This is a member of the teaching staff who both students and parents can use as a source of support, guidance and encouragement.

We have high expectations of behaviour. We encourage boys to take pride in their school, and this is easy. The 'Sacred Spirit' is very much in evidence at sporting and cultural events, and on school-wide occasions. We also expect boys to come to school in the correct uniform, with a high standard of personal grooming, and a positive attitude to learning. In turn, we ensure a safe and supportive environment for all our students. We have zero tolerance for bullying of any kind.
