WE ARE A CATHOLIC, MARIST AND CHAMPAGNAT SCHOOL
The Marist Brothers have
been an integral part of New Zealand Catholic education for more than 150 years.
They draw their inspiration and spirit from the vision of their founder Saint
Marcellin Champagnat, a French priest of the Society of Mary, who saw the need
to establish religious schools after the turmoil of the French Revolution.
Saint Marcellin worked tirelessly to establish small communities of Brothers to
reach out to and teach young people, especially those most in need.
He sent some of his
first Brothers to Oceania early in 1838 where they worked with the early
missionary priests and later went on to establish schools. The first Marist
Brothers' school in New Zealand was established in Wellington in 1876. Sacred
Heart College was established in Ponsonby, Auckland, 27 years later in 1903.
Today large numbers of
men and women continue the work of St Marcellin and the Brothers as they
educate young people in the Marist and Champagnat tradition.
A school develops its
own culture. For the Catholic school, its culture is centred on the person of
Jesus Christ and is shaped by the unique and distinctive charism of its founder
which permeates all aspects of school life. As a Catholic, Marist and
Champagnat educational community, the culture of Sacred Heart College is
