Student Leadership

"Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all" (Mark 9)

At Sacred Heart College we believe that leadership is much more than being elected or appointed to a specific position. In addition to the Prefects, all of whom are in Year 13, we offer are wide range of opportunities for students at all levels to develop their leadership skills.

Leadership is learned and develops over time through involvement with others. It is about service and is acquired most effectively through practice. With this in mind students are given the roles and opportunities which include:

Social Justice Involvement and Student Representatives

  • Bishops Youth representatives
  • Rotary - MUNA, Leadership Representatives
  • Amnesty International (Year 7 and 8)
  • Senior/Junior Peer Support
  • St Vincent De Paul Committee
  • Computer Monitors and Bus Monitors
  • Catholic Secondary Schools Representatives
  • Student Liturgy Leaders
  • Ball Committee  Class Counsellors (Year 7 and 8)
  • Collecting for Annual Appeals
  • Librarians
  • Fundraising Projects
  • House Leaders
  • Board of Trustees Representative
  • Prefects

Curriculum

There are many opportunities for leadership development in the classroom. In the physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and social sciences for example opportunities for projects in which initiating, planning, critical thinking, creative problem solving, and decision making are developed.

In Religious Education and English thematic units include biographies and autobiographies of outstanding leaders. Students are able to analyse and evaluate the motivation, contributions, and influences of these leaders and discuss their style of leadership. Major events and family and other influences important in their life are examined.

In the Arts students can learn leadership skills and gain inspiration from exposure and examination of talented people from the past and present who have enriched all of us through their contributions in the fine and performing arts.

Through transition and careers course, students learn how their interests, passions, and abilities can develop into careers. They can compare the contributions of others with their own value systems. For example, many Catholic leaders have been actively involved in addressing poverty and the human condition.

Co-Curricula Activities

Co-Curricula activities in sport, the arts and cultural groups, provide opportunities for learning and developing leadership. Team participation offers unique chances for our students to belong, support others, learn a variety of leadership styles and to put in practice what is often articulated. Students learn how to encourage others, create group spirit, and resolve conflict. They begin to understand diverse attitudes, skills, and talents and how to interact effectively with a diversity of people while working toward a common goal. This Year the opportunities available include the following;
