Annual Report from the 2010 magazine
The 1st XI will become a more resilient side and is more likely to compete at a higher level on a more consistent basis.
Congratulations to Matthew Quinn, JJ Mills and Glenn Phillips all of whom were selected in the ACA Winter Academy for 2010.
1st XI
Sacred Heart was seeded through to the fifth round of the 2010 Gillette Cup National One Day tournament. In the first match we met Macleans, which was an unpredictable opponent capable of playing much better than its record suggested. Sacred Heart batted first and posted 180, with Tom Byrne top scoring (52 not out) and Matt Quinn chipping in with 29 at the end. Tight bowling and sharp fielding especially in the ring saw Macleans finish its innings on 163. The feature of this win was the composure when defending a smallish total and the pressure we were able to exert that led to three run-outs at the end of the innings and effectively extinguished Macleans’ hopes From this, the 1st XI progressed to the quarter final where it met Auckland Grammar. A great bowling effort backed up by accurate fielding saw Grammar restricted to 137. Bowling highlights included Freddie Klaassen 4/15 and Matt Quinn 3/33. The batting effort did not back up the bowling, however, and SHC was dismissed for 100. Chasing a relatively small total proved too much and our batsmen never looked likely, apart from a glimmer of hope when Jordan Payne was batting. Unfortunately, his injured back hampered him too much and he was unable to get his team through to the next round. Sacred Heart College will have to wait until 2011 for another crack at the premier trophy in schoolboy cricket. In the one-day competition, we played St Kentigern College, losing by 34 runs, then lost to Rangitoto College by six wickets, then beat Macleans by 14 runs, lost to Westlake by 110 runs, and beat Kelston by eight wickets. This meant we finished fourth in our pool which consigned us to the plate round for the two-day competition. Although we bowled well, with Freddie Klaassen and Matt Quinn outstanding at times and some very accurate spells from Johnny Goosman and JJ Mills, we couldn’t back it up with consistent batting performances. So far in the plate round we have lost to Rosmini and Mt Albert. Our goal will be to win the rest of the games in this round and finish the competition in a more satisfactory way before heading off to the Carnival in Melbourne in December 2010. Marist Carnival A squad of 13 players headed to Melbourne in early December for the annual Marist Carnival. The squad members were Henry Blackwell, Scott Allison, JJ Mills, Jordan Payne, Tom Byrne, Joe Greene, Dylan Lynch, Alex Wiltshire, Chris Wilson, Jonathon Goosman, Bill McCarthy, Sam Crawford and Matthew Quinn. The trip was a huge learning curve for most of the boys with the standard much higher than what many of them had played. The trip started with a close loss to Camberwell Grammar, then we had the amazing experience of playing Melbourne Grammar on its No2 oval, which was of first-class standard, followed by five games at the tournament proper in Bendigo. At the Carnival the team managed to share second place on the table and will be better for the experience, especially all those boys coming back for next year and beyond. The highlight was Henry Blackwell scoring centuries against Melbourne Grammar and Canberra Grammar. He was also awarded batsman of the tournament and, along with Scott Allison, was selected in the 2009 tournament side. Another highlight was Jonathon Goosman receiving the award for fielder of the tournament based on points awarded by the umpires. 2nd XI The year began well with Conrad Ullrich (captain), Dominic Jennings and Joseph Bolton taking the lead roles in the team. They led us to some great victories and the team grew as a whole over the first half of the season. The team was coached by Mr Wood on Tuesdays (fielding) and by Mr Dullabh on Thursdays (batting and bowling).
We lost the first match against Kelston, but two good innings from both Joseph Bolton and Cameron Lynch made sure we put up a good fight. Next we had a good win against Macleans’ 2nd XI. Our attacking bowler Xavier Lardner was outstanding, taking five wickets in his first five overs, and ending up with figures of six for 36 off nine overs. Halfway through the season we began our two-day matches. Our last game against Rosmini 2nd XI at Rosmini College, where we had a disappointing loss. The season has begun well and talent and leadership within the team is evident. Hopefully we can continue to grow and develop as a team and finish the next term with more wins. The squad: Conrad Ullrich (Captain), Dominic Jennings, Joseph Bolton, Alex Wiltshire, Xavier Lardner, Ronash Jattan, Matthew Haussrer, Dylan Lynch, Zachary McFadyen, James Matulovich, Anthony Quinn, Bill McCarthy, Cameron Lynch, Harry Martin, Mr Raj Dullabh (Coach), Mr Stuart Wood (Coach), Mr Patrick Dodd (Manager). Mr Patrick Dodd, Manager Senior A The first term has been all about consistency. With a mixture of some very good talent combined with a reasonably social make-up, this team has had a few very good performances.
Stand out 1st innings wins against Auckland Grammar and Liston were helped along by some outstanding batting displays, notably from Matt Nola who has notched up two half centuries and is averaging 51. Some consistent batting from James Wallace at the top of the order was helped along by our own ‘master-blaster’, JT Greaney, who is now feared by spinners Auckland-0wide. Matt Haussrer had a few good knocks early on and was given the chance to move up to the 2nd XI team, which he took. A highlight was an impressive 10th wicket stand when it looked like we were down and out. Up stepped Angus Cullen and Jonathan van Meeuwen who helped us to an extra 59 runs, with Jonathan being bowled out for 37 and Angus being left stranded on 46 not out. In the bowling department, JT Greaney was our main attacking bowler against openers and nabbed some great early wickets. Bundy was impressive with his efforts bowling down the channel, restricting scoring opportunities and applying some good pressure against the middle order. Our stand-out bowler was our young spinner Angus Cullen who has taken 11 wickets to date, with seven wickets over two innings against Liston. Josh Cooney and Jonathan van Meeuwen provided some good bowling spells also. Our star fielder, Matt Rawlings, imposed his presence and beat fear into the opposition from all over the park.
Mr Nick Fitness, Coach Senior B The team is made up of predominantly Year 11 and 12 students, and was placed in a section of the competition with schools from the North Shore. Our venues have been as varied as our results, with the match against Whangaparaoa College played at Northcote, the match against Takapuna Grammar played at Hato Petera, a home game against Rangitoto College, a match at Orewa, and the final game against Long Bay College at Westlake.
The Senior B grade plays one-day matches, with a maximum of 30 overs bowled to each team. We lost our matches against Whangaparaoa, Takapuna and Orewa, and won our matches against Rangitoto and Long Bay, the latter being a fitting match to conclude Term 1. We batted first, making 200/5 declared. Jake Flashman and David Crooymans opened the batting and made 22 and 33 respectively; Sam Semple compiled a very solid 45 not out, and Finn Wilson a useful 26. Long Bay then batted and with one over to go, was 192/9; David Crooymans was handed the ball for the last over; his first delivery was hit for four, his second hit the wickets and we were home by four runs. The team was captained by Jake Flashman. He and Matthew Pianina established themselves as reasonably steady opening batsmen. Jack Morley showed the potential to bat well, and hit a very pleasing 52 not out against Takapuna. Stefan Ilich could, on occasion, hit the ball a long way. David Crooymans developed through the five matches with scores of 28 and 33 in the final matches. James Whyte opened the bowling and was consistently accurate and economical. In the match against Rangitoto he took 2/12 and Cameron Flavell took 3/15. Both Matthew Pianina and David Crooymans were successful as spin bowlers - Matthew taking 3/19 in our opening match, and David, in the final two matches, taking 4/32 and 3/39. We look forward to the competition continuing in Term 4. The team: Jake Flashman (captain), Matthew Pianina, Jack Morley, Declan Wilson, Finn Wilson, Wim Duncker, David Crooymans, Cameron Flavell, Nick Gillingwater, Sam Semple, Anein Simon, Avein Simon, James Whyte. Mr Peter Hale, Coach Colts This half season was very successful with the team finishing first in its pool. Tom Ritchie performed consistently with the bat and several bowlers put in very good performances, including Sebastian Salmon, Josh MacKinnon, Conrad Benefield and Tom Ritchie.
Westlake (last year’s champion): 1st innings win to Sacred Heart. Westlake 157: Sebastian Salmon 5-24; Joshua McKinnon 3-41. 2nd innings 94-7 - Conrad Benefield 3-33; Tom Ritchie 3-19. Sacred Heart 164 and 20/1: Tom Ritchie 48; Pierce Fletcher 29; Joshua McKinnon 20 - highlight being a 93-run partnership between Tom Ritchie and Pierce Fletcher. Liston College:Liston 93 all out. Sacred Heart 94/5. Mt Roskill: Outright win to Sacred Heart. Mt Albert: 1st innings 83 - Sebastian Salmon 3/15; Cory Larsen 3/15; Tom Ritchie 3/17. Mt Albert 2nd innings 137 - Sebastian Salmon 3/33; Cory Larsen 3/27. Sacred Heart 182/7 declared - Cory Larsen 41 not out. 2nd innings: 39 without loss. The squad: Liam McNamara, Jake Faamalepe, Sebastian Salmon, Rory O’Brien, Cory Larsen, Matt Foote, Pierce Fletcher, Corbin Anstiss, Tom Ritchie, Ben Blackwell, Joshua McKinnon, Conrad Benefield Br Gerard Mahoney, Coach Intermediate A Under coach Mr John Mahoney, the team has had three good wins so far. Myles Driscoll has been a consistent performer with bat and ball and has been well supported by Tom Rawlins, Sam Semple and Liam McNamara at various stages.
St Kentigern: Day 2 win to Sacred Heart. St Kentigern 152: Myles Driscoll 4/18. SHC155/4: Myles Driscoll 45; Tom Rawlins 40. Macleans: Day 2 win to Sacred Heart (1st Innings) by 109 runs. Macleans 116 and 97/5. SHC 225/4 declared. Auckland Grammar: win to Sacred Heart by one run. SHC 115: Sam Semple 34; Auckland Grammar 3 114/9; Liam Mcnamara 3/11. Intermediate B The Stallions got off to a wonderful start, beating Pakuranga College comprehensively. But this first win saw the team get too full of itself and suffer the consequences. We lost the next game against Orewa College with five overs to spare. A notable performance was from Adrian Boughtwood, with a blistering 31, which gave the Stallions a slightly more respectable total. The next week saw the Stallions take on St Kentigern. On its home ground, St Kentigern was bowled out for 129. In response, Luke Morgan decided he would take the ‘bull by the horns’ and open the batting. He was bowled out first ball of the match and received a royal golden duck. He later re-entered the batting and picked up another golden duck. But the big-hitting Cory Bennenbroek then struck 62 runs, which included 12 fours and a six, before being run out by his sluggish partner. This knock should have secured the win, needing only 12 more runs off six overs with five wickets to spare. However, the Stallions ended up losing the match by 10 runs. The next week, the team was psyched up and ready to avenge its last two losses, playing Rosmini at SHC. We posted a respectable 102 with Alex Dean top scoring with 22. Rosmini batted extremely well, and won the game by six wickets. In the final game of the term, the Stallions played Auckland Grammar. Determined to win the last game of the term, an inspirational speech by the coach fired the boys up and sent them out to field with a killer attitude. The Stallions fielded well and restricted Grammar to 274/4 off 26 overs. Batting with full confidence, we could only post a score of 113, which was a disappointing result for a team with such cricketing potential. The team: Alex Dean (captain), Luke Morgan, Adrian Boughtwood, Mark Farrell, Tom Farrell, Cory Bennenbroek, Joe Lewis, Max McCarthy, Alex Rivers, Zac Gadsby, Connor Hunter, Kyle Coogen. Intermediate Mid Week
The team has had a strong start to the season, finishing first equal on eight points with Liston College. Captain Nicholas O’Connell was a key member of the team along with Guy Hornblower, Ben Hermans, Liam Roberts, Tom McHugh, Vincent Herbert, Liam Polwart, George Boyan, Angus Cullen, Andrew Todd and Matt Lewis. There were also cameo appearances from Joe Green and Tom Byrne.
Highlights included scores of 52 by Guy Hornblower, 144 by Nicholas O’Connell, and 99 by Ben Hermans. It was pleasing to see the players go on to represent the school at the highest level after a tough season, which was made easier by the early season training camp at Kariotahi Beach. Thanks to Mr Dodd and Mr Wood for helping with transport and umpiring during the season. Junior A It has been great start to the season for the Junior A with two first-innings wins, one outright win and a win in its one-day match. We have batted for four innings, have not been bowled out, scored a total of 736 runs, and have only conceded 21 wickets.
Our first match was against Auckland Grammar. We batted first and declared at 246/8. We bowled Grammar out for 144 and in the follow-on at close of play had recorded 36/4. The highlight of the match was a great opening stand by Mitchell Butler and Eli Prasad. The second game was against Mt Roskill, bowled out for 122. In reply we declared at 226/6. In its second innings, Mt Roskill was 170/7 at the close of play. In round three we faced Liston College, the only other undefeated team in the grade. Liston batted first and was bowled out for 101. In reply, we made 202/6 declared. Liston was bowled out for 75 in the second innings, producing our best result to date - a win by an innings and 26 runs. The highlights were Matt Lynch 68, and Ben Keen 46 not out, and great bowling by Eli Prasad 4/17 and Harry Semple 3/21 in Liston’s second innings. Trent Bradley took 5/16 in the first innings. Our last game of Term 1 was a one-day match against Kelston, which we bowled out for 71. In reply we made 74/1; a good nine-wicket win. Mr Stephen Alberston, Coach Junior B White During the first term our team played seven games of which we lost six, and won one, which was against the other 6B team. I think we had a good range of players and we worked well together - it was just unfortunate we lost some games by small margins.
The team: Nick Williams, Brendon Allen, Andrew Rogers, James Christianson, Ethan Pole, Michael Balle, Taylor Bush, Alan Nisbett, Mathew Hanchet Josh Kelly, Felix Vaunois Rory Deane Nick Williams Junior B Red The team struggled a little but always played with enthusiasm and commitment. Most of the players practised hard and will benefit from the trainings under coach Stuart Wood. We will do better in the second half with the benefit of that coaching and some general improvement in the fielding, in particular.

Br Gerard Trophy This was played on Sunday, 28 February at Sacred Heart College in perfect cricket conditions. Teams from Liston, St Peters and Rosmini vied for the much sought after Br Gerard Trophy, which has been keenly contested between those school at Colts and Intermediate levels since 2007.
Sacred Heart had wins in both grades in the morning games, which left them the task of winning the finals in the afternoon to retain the trophy. In a hard-fought Colts final, SHC chased down 112 to beat St Peters, with an outstanding contribution from Glen Phillips of 52. The other final was a real nail biter, with SHC only posting 93 and Rosmini seemingly cruising. The team dragged itself back into the game with some outstanding bowling by Hugo Fletcher (4/0) to dismiss the opposition for 89. Sacred Heart College retained the Br Gerard Trophy for 2010. Year 7/8 squad:
Anton Illich, Tim Burke, Paul Rassie, Rory King, Nick Matijasevich, Christy O’Brien, Rawiri Short-Wilcox, Hugo Fletcher, Dominic Blake, Nathan Cleary, Tim Dowling, Xavier Taucher.
