Cricket: Br Gerard TrophyBr Gerard TrophyThis was played on Sunday, 28 February at Sacred Heart College in perfect cricket conditions. Teams from Liston, St Peters and Rosmini vied for the much sought-after Br Gerard Trophy which has been keenly contested between those school at Colts and Intermediate levels since 2007.
Sacred Heart had wins in both grades in the morning games which left them the task of winning the finals in the afternoon to retain the trophy. In a hard fought Colts final, SHC chased down 112 to beat St Peters, with an outstanding contribution from Glen Phillips of 52.
The other final was a nail biter. With SHC only posting 93 and Rosmini seemingly cruising, Sacred Heart dragged itself back into the game with some outstanding bowling by Hugo Pierce to dismiss the opposition for 89. Sacred Heart has retained the Br Gerard Trophy for 2010. v St Peters College - SHC win by 88 runs SHC 175 (Nick Matijasevich 50 not out (retired), Paul Rassie 52 not out (retired)) St Peters 87/7 (Tim Dowling 1/1 off 2 overs, Nick Matijasevich 2/8 off 2 overs, Xavier Taucher 1/4 off 2 overs, Rory King 1/12 off 4 overs, Hugo Fletcher 1/6 off 2 overs) v Rosmini - SHC win by 6 runs SHC 92/9 (Paul Rassie 19, Tim Dowling 17, Christy O’Brien 15) Rosmini 86 all out (Hugo Fletcher 4/0 off 2 overs, Rory King 3/16 off 4 overs, Tim Dowling 1/14 off 4overs) Year 7/8 squad: Anton Illich, Tim Burke, Paul Rassie, Rory King, Nick Matijasevich, Christy O’Brien, Rawiri Short-Wilcox, Hugo Fletcher, Dominic Blake, Nathan Cleary, Tim Dowling, Xavier Taucher Colts Section v Liston - SHC win Liston struggled through to 93 with most of the Sacred Heart bowlers bowling well, especially Seb Salmon and Cory Larsen. Jake Faamaleupe and Ben Blackwell were the best of the batters in a relatively easy chase Liston 93 all out. Sacred Heart 94-5. v St Peters - SHC win (final) St Peters got of to a solid start with the top order all getting starts but a couple of wickets close together and a very good leg side stumping by wicketkeeper Glen Phillips of Conrad Benefield allowed Sacred Heart to grab back some initiative. Two run outs followed quickly and St Peters only managed 111 after such a good start. The loss of early wickets failed to deter the Sacred Heart top order as first Glen Phillips and then Pierce Fletcher played controlled aggressive cricket to see them home. St Peters 111 - Conrad Benefield 2-22, Matt Foote 2-22. SHC 112-3 - Glen Phillips 53, Pierce Fletcher 31no. Colts squad: Seb Salmon, Rory O’Brien, Cory Larsen, Matt Foote, Pierce Fletcher, Corbin Anstiss, Glen Phillips, Tom Ritchie, Liam McNamara, Jake Faamalepe, Ben Blackwell, Joshua McKinnon, Conrad Benefield.
