Welcome to Sacred Heart College Cycling!

We are a bunch of enthusiastic parents and boys who endeavour to do our best for the school and provide a competitive and supportive environment that fosters both participation and excellence.

The parent committee organises and coordinates all the events and day to day running of the club along with the invaluable assistance of teachers.

Bikes and associated equipment are the responsibility of the parents, but the committee will provide any help needed with requirements. Sacred Heart Cycling currently provides the school skinsuits, and from the coaching fee, entry to most events.

We are most grateful to our sponsors, Bike Barn and Watershed.
Bike Barn provides an invaluable discount on goods and services.
Watershed provides financial assistance and the warm up jackets that are available through Mr Hook.

We compete in five school events throughout the year, as well as a number of club events.

The season runs from May to September, with training recommended all year. Team selections are determined on current form.

Sacred Heart Cycling coach Herke Beukens has worked hard with the boys this season, providing support at both training and competitions. Many thanks to those parent riders who have also assisted in helping keep training safe over the season.

The season started with the Waterfront Team Time Trials, a seven-race series over winter. Sacred Heart entered two senior teams and three junior teams, and Jonathan Laycock continued as captain in his last year at the College. The Senior A team posted fairly consistent times over the season, with a best placing of fifth, the highest an SHC senior team has ever finished. Overall, they came eighth in the series, while the Junior A came 10th. Our U14 team unfortunately punctured in its only race, but were heading towards a respectable time.

North Island Championships saw a change of venue to Cambridge High School this year and it was a very positive experience. We entered Senior A and Junior A teams, finishing 10th and 17th respectively in the team time trials.

Individual road races results

Year 7 & 8: Lochlan Gilder 28th.
U15: Mateus Mackenzie 11th, Oliver Fawcett 44th.
U17: Joshua Hunter 4th, Keegan Gilder 32nd, Mitchell Judd 57th
U20: Jonathan Laycock 5th.

National Individual Championships were held on the weekend of 26-28 August in Mt Wellington. The best-placed riders were:

Pablo Fernandez: 17th in the U15 Boys time trial, 6th in the hill climb, 6th in the criterium and 7th overall.
Oliver Fawcett: 37th in the U16 Boys time trial, 37th in the hill climb, 39th in the criterium and 36th overall.
Joshua Hunter:11th in the U17 Boys time trial, 6th in the hill climb, 10th in the criterium and 11th overall.
Jonathan Laycock: 14th in the U20 Boys time trial, 12th in the hill climb, 5th in the criterium and 8th overall. Jonathan broke Daniel Smith’s school hill climb record, with Joshua Hunter less than a second behind.

School nationals at Palmerston North in October had their highs and lows. The high point was Lochlan Gilder’s gold medal in the U13 Boys grade. Pablo produced top-10 finishes in road race (8th) and points race (7th), while Keegan Gilder came 8th in the road race, but broke a spoke in the points race. The lows included having two bikes badly damaged when they fell off the back of the school trailer, Jonathan having his bike broken in a freak non-riding accident, and two boys crashing, sustaining bike damage and minor injuries. We need better luck next year!
