FootballFootball plays an integral role in the extracurricular life of the College and has gone from strength to strength over the past few seasons.
Through the evolving Sports Institute, strategic planning and the involvement of a number of key coaches, we are continuing to work hard on developing player potential from a young age and this has been seen in the success of a number of our A sides across the junior grades. In 2010, we fielded 10 football teams and, with the overwhelming popularity and success of football as a predominant sport at the College, we now boast 16 teams for the 2011 season. Our 1st XI had a very successful year and below is an excerpt from the full 1st XI report in the 2010 College magazine: We wrote last year the foundations had been laid . and that the solid foundations would enable us to move forward in 2010. Well move forward we did! The teams results speak for themselves: 1. Third Auckland Secondary Schools Premier League. 2. Third New Zealand Secondary Schools National Tournament, Napier. 3. Second Auckland Secondary Schools Knock Out Cup. 4. Winner of the Bishop Dunn Catholic Cup. 5. Winners of the Alex Harvey Cup the Ranfurly Shield of NZ Secondary Schools Football. Football would not be what it is without the ongoing support of many teachers, parents, senior students who are prepared to get involved. We have been privileged to have the assistance of the following parents, teachers, coaches and managers for the 2011 season. Head Coaches: 1st XI Head Coach: Danny Hay (All Whites 1996-2007) Assistant Coach: Neil Penfold (Director of Sport) Manager: John Durkin 2nd XI - Coach: Michael Parrott
Other Coaches: Andrew Morris Terry Broderick Michael Murphy Trevor Gaffney Chris Edey Scott Lawrence Terry Torrens Simon Kay Phil Andersen Senior Student Coaches: Oliver Wright Nic Garelja Stefan Ilich Ricky Lines Aidan Lyne Roy Kelly Romano McMillian-Caires Diego Lopez Jake Carcaterra Jordan Roberts Managers: Kim Bolton Bernie Liddington Erin McWilliams Looking to the future, there are many avenues being explored to continue to build on the success of the past few seasons and we are aware of the necessity to ensure that this happens. The Sacred Heart College name has now become firmly entrenched as a proud and respected school of high quality football, and this is only the beginning. 2011 is bound to be yet another exciting year for football in the College and with the roll increase and added popularity and interest in football in New Zealand we will be looking for ways to continue to grow the sport in the future.
