| Year 7 & 8 Interzone
Year 7 & 8 InterzoneThe Year 7 team made heavy work of the first pool game against Rangeview, but in the end came away with the win thanks to a Frank Clarke penalty. They went on to beat both St Kentigern and Papatoetoe impressively, to head their pool and progress to the semi final. They met St Peters, and played well - enjoying much of the possession, and creating many chances that they just couldn’t finish. St Peters came back into the game in the second half and started to create its own chances. However, with a couple of minutes left on the clock, Ben Poulter was put in on goal and coolly finished past the St Peters keeper. The final against Northcross was just a bridge too far for our tired players. They were up against easily the best and physically stronger side in the competition. Northcross dominated the game and won comfortably, 2-0. The team should be pleased to have played good football throughout the tournament and won through to the final. However, it now knows the standard if it is to be Auckland Champion next year. In contrast, the Year 8 team struggled in early pool games, losing to both Murrays Bay and Blockhouse Bay. These were two games that could so easily have gone in our favour, but poor finishing cost us dearly, with both oppositions being more clinical in front of goal. The third game saw a much improved performance, and better finishing, to beat Papatoetoe 6-0. This meant it missed out on a semi final spot, and instead played off for fifth and sixth, against Bucklands Beach. Again a solid performance resulted in a 2-0 victory. These boys will be disappointed not to make the top four, and will know that as a year group there are improvements to be made ahead of school Saturday morning football next year. Congratulations to both sides for winning their Eastern Zone tournaments and reaching the Interzone, and in particular the Year 7 side, which had a good tournament, and is now Auckland Interzone Runner-Up for 2010.
