SHCOBA Golf Day

The Br Maurice Cup was played at Pukekohe Golf Club on a sunny Friday.  Paul Fisher ‘83, a lawyer from the Waikato, won the Br Maurice Cup.  He also won it several years ago.  Mike Dale ‘62 won the non-registered players section.  It was the first time it had been played on a week day and was a great success with 80 starters.  Thanks to Paddy Dawson ‘60 and Bruce Kerr ‘63 for a well organised event.

The two recipients of the 2009 Rugby Scholarships are

Siate Tokolahi the Sean Fitzpatrick Scholarship and Jordan Taufau the Brother Michael Scholarship.

Siate is from Tonga and is in Year 12, he has settled in to Leonard House as a boarder.  He is a Front Row Prop who is very mobile, is dedicated to his training and has made good progress, fitting in well to the 1st XV environment.

Jordan has also moved into Leonard House as a full time boarder.  He is a powerful Loose Forward No 8 who enjoys the physical side of the game.  He is also a NZ U17 representative 2009.

Senior Old Boys reunion May 2009

Around 50 Senior Old Boys from 1935 to 1949 gathered on Friday 15th May for a morning of renewed friendship, famously remembered sporting feats and academic prowess, and a walk around the College campus lead by the Head Boy Luke Schuler and his deputies.  Those who had left school in a different time and age were impressed.  Some things were very different, some unchanged.  The spirit and pride of Sacred Heart remained the same, the commitment to sporting excellence and academic achievement remained the same, the way it is achieved is somewhat different.  Suites of computers, electronics and graphics, sports science, weight rooms and a marvellous Aquatic Centre – this was the stuff of dreams for these older gents.

All who attended would agree, its was fun, its was worth the trip, and we’ll do it again!

Michael O’Halloran ‘66, Has this to report: “I attended SHC for 8 years, commencing as a day boy in 1959 in Form 1 (Year 7), and was taught by Br Kenneth and Br Coleman in Form 2.  In Forms 3 and 4, my form master was Br Stephen and in Upper 6th the original Br Gerard.  In mid 1962, in Form 4, when my parents moved to Wellington, I became a boarder at the College until 6th Form, Year 13, (1966).  In 6th Form I was in the infirmary for several months with glandular fever, much of that time in isolation, and not well enough to travel home.  I repeated that 6th Form year.  So I attended SHC for 8 years – thought to be the only student who attended SHC at Glendowie for such a term – and may yet recover from the experience.........  I completed my LLB at Auckland University and live in Auckland”

Grant Stembridge ’66, was on hand to see his son James inducted as a Prefect at SHC.

Jeffrey Friis ’62 travelled to Auckland to see his great nephew Luke Schuler  inducted as Head Boy.  Anna Friis, Luke’s mother, wrote:  “Jeffrey Friis is my uncle, my father’s brother.  He is a recently retired doctor, who lives in Katikati.  As both of Luke’s grandfathers have passed away Jeff is a special part of our family.  While he is now unwell, he made the journey to Auckland for the Family Mass and Prefect’s Induction, and I know it was a very moving experience for him.  This photo of Luke with this great uncle Jeff was taken in the Old Boys Lounge that wonderful day.”

Milan Mrkusich ‘41

Forty years almost to the day Milan Mrkusich exhibits at the Gus Fisher Galleries.

Trans-Form: The Abstract Art of Milan Mrkusich was described as many-hued, vibrant and strong, Milan Mrkusich's abstract paintings have impressed viewers for half a century. Curated by Alan Wright and Edward Hanfling, this selection of major paintings provides a new reading of Mrkusich as an alchemical transformer of media and materials. This major exhibition provides a unique opportunity to study firsthand the deployment of symbolic form, line and colour in Mrkusich's painting over four decades.

Trans-Form examines the interrelationship of form and content in the work of New Zealand's foremost abstract painter. Although Mrkusich’s paintings have often been explained in purely formal (visual) terms, they were never intended to be just the sum of their physical components. Mrkusich believes meaning and form are inseparable, and that content emerges from the artist’s encounter with his materials. The works on show reflect Mrkusich’s interests in Alchemy and the notion of art as an act of transformation.

This will be the first exhibition of Mrkusich's work in a public gallery since 1996. Presented as part of the Auckland Festival 2009, the exhibition happens to mark exactly 40 years since the artist last presented a solo exhibition as part of the Auckland Festival in 1969, and is timed to celebrate the publication of a new book, Mrkusich: the Art of Transformation, published by AUP and available from the gallery.

Brothers @ the College

Compiled by Br Marcel Hall ‘55

Br Stephen Coll

He was born in Larrikin’s Flat near Kumara in 1896, educated in Sydney at the Marist Juniorate commencing at the age of 13. Secondary schooling was at St Joseph’s College, Sydney and he was Professed as a Brother in 1916. As a part time student at Sydney University he soon showed his rare literary gifts, winning scholarship and medals.  He was the first 1st year student to win the coveted Wentworth Medal for essays and in fact won it twice.  He also left his mark in French and Mathematics.  He returned to NZ in 1927 and taught at Sacred Heart College from 1930-31 then went to Gisborne and Invercargill.
In 1938 he returned to SHC for the rest of his teaching life.  His students became Bishops, Professors and authors, and very sound Old Boys.  He was an active member of the Old Boys Association for 30 or 40 years.

He was editor of the NZ Catholic Secondary Schools Journal for many years. Old Boys will remember he was equally at home with a crowbar or an axe......and was plumber, electrician and janitor as the occasion demanded.

Decorated in 1976 with the OBE he was a Marist Brother for 80 years.  He died 15th October 1988.

Memory:  A careless Form 6 essay was returned with this comment from him “No comment except perhaps a rude one”

Brother Michael’s 80th Birthday!

A number of Old Boys thought they could do something special for the Great Man to celebrate this milestone.  As it turned out, Brother did not want any fuss, definitely no party, but he did agree to attend the All Black v Australia Test with Old Boys at Eden Park in July.  As well, the Old Boys in the photo met with Brother Michael at a cafe in St Heliers to celebrate his 80th. It was a wonderful gathering and much appreciated by Brother.  He was presented with a new wide screen T.V.

SHC Development Foundation

There has been a gradual changing of the guard at the Development Foundation over the past year. Steve Ulenberg stood down as Chairman and trustee after many years of service, Bruce Blundell also stepped down to spend more time with family, and Br Sean Hanaray resigned.  Br Sean was the first Chairman of the DFT and has been a trustee since its inception in 1995.  All these fine people have made outstanding contributions to the college over many years and will be missed.

Two new trustees have taken up the baton; Paul Greaney is a current parent with strong business acumen and he has already made a huge contribution to the College and the Development Foundation.  Chris Arbuckle ‘74 is an Old Boy, a current parent, a former member of the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee, and has a special interest in financial management.

Other trustees are Old Boy and member of the SHCOBA John Molloy ‘64, Peter Coakley, a former parent and long term trustee who is still contributing his considerable skills to the college long after his sons have left, Chris Klaassen ‘79, Old Boy and fundraiser extraordinaire, along with Jim Dale, Principal of SHC, who is the CEO, and Lyn Luxton the Development Foundation Manager.

So the Development Foundation is in good heart and looking forward to a busy year as the college prepares for a phase of building and redevelopment to accommodate the roll increase that the Ministry has recently approved.
