Update from Peter Hamilton (02):
Peter has worked for the past 2 years for C.B. Richard Ellis as a Property Valuer, after completing a B.Com/B.Prop at Auckland Uni. He enjoys his job and last year for 'Movember' he organised an in-house competition to support the worthy cause - prostate cancer research - and, with the backing of the company directors, CBRE raised the most money for a New Zealand company. He flats with a group of Sacred boys and this year they started a social rugby team to play for Marist under 85kg. As they improved it soon became serious and by the end of the season they say it was like being back on the sidelines at Sacred Heart with so many parents supporting them. They didn’t win the competition but gave it a good go! Peter continues his involvement with the National Youth Theatre Company that he and 4 others set up a couple of years ago. This year he has been the set designer for some very successful shows including "High School Musical" at Aotea Centre and a re-run at the Civic. Peter is transferring with his company to Sydney in the New Year 2008 and already has connected with some old school mates who live there. So who knows what they may set up with Old Boys in OZ!!

Mark Rassie (05) and Matthew Fisk (05) popped into the College and were snapped with Mr Rob Pepping, Deputy Principal.
Scott Cossey (02) and David Pender (02) both did University of Auckland degrees in Visual Arts at the Manukau School of Visual Arts (MSVA). They both graduated in 2007, Scott with a major in Photography and David with a major in Jewellery.
David writes:
Scott and I have started a small business called Design Stiles; specializing in the printing of photo-quality images onto ceramic tiles. These can be hung on interior walls as a unique art work and are even durable enough to be grouted into bathrooms and kitchens as murals, features, and splash backs. Scott having trained in photography provides the stunning images for the tiles. We also custom print so people can create tiles with special significance to them as well as preserving heirloom photos.

Damon Kennedy (94) writes : I am currently living in Sydney and have recently started up an equipment finance company, Quadrent Pty Ltd, with another SHC Old Boy, Simon Butler (86), which is very exciting. The business develops vendor-financing programs for major corporates and is the Australian subsidiary of a New Zealand company called Quadrent Ltd, which is based in the PWC Building in Auckland.
Tom Rodwell (94) is back in Auckland via the USA where he has given a number of concerts. He is making his mark in the UK and Europe with his brand of music: funky gospel blues.

Mike Sharp (63) lives in Albany, south of Perth. He is happily retired and describes life as a bit like a duck in water, on the top it looks like not much is happening but underneath his feet are paddling like mad! He was in Auckland recently for a family celebration and bought his two daughters to visit the College. He caught up with Br Cyril and Br Reginald, and was impressed with the development of the college and its facilities.

Pour, Pour the Pirate Sherry!
In the 1950s and early 1960s, Gilbert and Sullivan held sway in the hearts and minds of the Opera Club at Sacred Heart College and each season and each new production saw the emergence of new and raw talent, also the refining of those more experienced in the ways of stage craft. However, each and every performer exhibited as yet unknown skills, and a dedication and passion for their roles. Their endeavours and the receptive and enthusiastic audiences inspired them each year toward more demanding operas.
The Pirates of Penzance was to prove a popular choice as it was produced both in 1955 and 1959, and the photos from that era show that most boys when dressed as girls had excellent legs! A reference here to those who toiled in years gone by: “About Br Theophane, ‘The Opera was a labour of love for him, made easier by his musical ability and the joy he gained from work well done.’ Following in his footsteps was Br Ralph, undaunted by his predecessor he set about with a stout heart and soon the Opera Club had gained yet another able and well equipped person to lead it into its next phase.”
One of the wonderful and heartening areas of any production is the full-hearted support demonstrated by so many staff, parents and the Marist community here at Sacred Heart. And that continues to endure.
The 2007 Pirates of Penzance was performed by the Sacred Heart College Year 7 & 8 students and by invitation also a cluster of Baradene maidens. With a total cast of nearly 100 students, including the orchestra and choir, it was not a small undertaking.
We had a raft of talent to choose from for many a lad has envisaged himself on the rigging, swigging on rum, sailing the high seas - just generally being with a rollicking band of pirates.
To add to the occasion a nostaglic group of Old Boys who had been Gilbert & Sullivan thespians in the 50’s joined the 2007 Pirates on stage at the close of the final night and gave a resounding rendition of their favourite number. The old spark was still there and the audience showed their appreciation.

David Harper (62),
had early success in New Zealand as an aspiring concert pianist which led him to further study at the Royal College of Music in London. This was funded by scholarships from the Arts Council of New Zealand and the Royal Schools of Music. However, an overwhelming passion for the lyric arts very soon eclipsed any solo piano ambitions, and within a few years of leaving college he had fulfilled his dream to work exclusively with singers.
Four years spent on the music staff at English National Opera in London provided the invaluable experience in a broad range of operatic styles, but eventually David resigned in order to launch a freelance career. Invitations to perform with a wide variety of singers on the recital platform followed in quick succession. Many other engagements throughout the British Isles and across Europe soon gained for him a glowing reputation as a singer's accompanist of rare sensitivity and support. For many years he was also harpsichordist with the Stockholm-based Drottningholms Baroque Ensemble, frequently joining them on tours throughout Scandinavia and Europe, the USA, and the Far East.
In addition to David's prolific performing activities, a deep interest in vocal technique and performance style has led to the development of an immensely successful vocal coaching practice. His wide-reaching reputation in this field centres around a thriving London-based studio where his client list includes young aspiring student professionals from all points of the globe as well as numerous prominent international artists.
David return to the South Pacific courtesy of the Johnson Bequest, to continue his twice-yearly Guest Coaching commitment at Opera Australia and a much anticipated return visit to the 2007 New Zealand National Singing School as Guest Tutor.

Rugby Sponsors Lunch
A lunch was organized by Old Boy Brett Davis (74) to thank sponsors of the 1st XV rugby team. This was held on Saturday 23rd June prior to the traditionally competitive match between SHC and King’s College. The food was delicious and the anticipation of the sturdy game of rugby ahead created a buzzy atmosphere that was enjoyed by all. A large crowd gathered on No 1 field to support SHC, unfortunately King’s was to come away the winner on this occasion. |

A bunch of third form boarders from 1979 decided that it was time for a reunion. So after numerous phone calls, internet searches, emails and homing pigeons dispatched to all four corners of the globe eighteen of the ‘originals’ were tracked down. (big thanks to Hugh Meares who must have been a frustrated detective in a former life.)
The venue for the reunion was the All Blacks v Australia test match at Eden Park with pre game lunch and afternoon drinks at the Kingslander. John Kean and Rodney Brookes flew in from Australia and the locals gathered from Taranaki, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Auckland. After 28 years there was plenty to catch up on and the reunion continued well into the evening….a win by the All Blacks adding to the occasion!

This was a most convivial morning held at Sacred Heart College on August 23rd enjoyed by 25 Old Boys. The guests were welcomed by Principal Jim Dale; John Molloy (64) Old Boy and trustee of the Development Foundation; and Br Richard Dunleavy (46) Head of the Brothers Community at SHC. There was plenty of lighthearted chat and reminiscing over morning tea, followed by a tour of the college, including the assembly hall where sporting photos through the decades are on view. Some Old Boys took the opportunity to visit Brothers they remembered who are still living at SHC. Joe Hall (51) Pat Hilliar (52) and Robin Ritchie (51) who were all members of the 1951 Champion rowing team remembered the good times, and the Ryan brothers, Gerald (49) and Frank (50) issued a challenge to the boys of Pompallier House to match their achievement by winning the House competitions.

"The evening took the format of a sumptuous meal prepared by Justin Smith's wife. Justin and his sub committee did an excellent job of getting Old Boys along. It was unanimously agreed that next year's reunion would be organised by James Sowane (89).
"Br Paul spoke of his reminiscences of his days at SHC and Bede Brittenden read a report that had been prepared by Br Marcel Hall (55). The evening went late into the night (and some attendees may still be there!!)"
There is a sizeable database of Fiji contacts, so those interested in reunions in the sunny Pacific in 2008 contact James Sowane james.sowane@pdfj.com.fj in Fiji or Bede Brittenden Brittenden@xtra.co.nz in Auckland for further information.

Charitable Tax Rebates:
New tax rebates for charitable donations will take effect from April 2008. The present ceiling will be lifted and there will be a 33 1/3 rebate for qualifying donations up to the net annual income of the donor. This has been loudly applauded by charities throughout the country and is a long overdue development.
Annual Giving 2007
Initiated in 2001, Annual Giving benefits current students immediately. It supports projects and provides resources that are not able to be included in the current years budget. In 2006 it assisted in the purchase of new guitars for the music department, a long awaited scrum machine, and outdoor seating for students, staff and visitors to enjoy the magnificent environment here at Sacred Heart.
